Forestry
HLM is an MPI approved competent mapper for erodible land and provides LUC mapping and erosion control forestry advice.
Erosion Prone Land Assessments
Different LUC units in different regions round the country have restrictions placed on them regarding plantation forestry activities due to its susceptibility to erosion. These classifications are based on mapping by the New Zealand Land Resource Inventory (NZLRI). This has been completed over the whole of New Zealand at a regional scale. When used at a farm scale there are inaccuracies in this data. For this reason MPI allows landowners to engage a competent LUC mapper to map their potential forestry site to determine if the NZLRI data for that site is accurate and where necessary reclassify the site based on a detailed site assessment. HLM is an MPI approved competent mapper for such assessments.
LUC Assessments
Under new ETS regulations there are restrictions around the registration of forestry in the ETS based on the LUC classification of the land on which it is grown. The database used to identify the LUC classification of a property is a nationwide dataset that has been mapped at a regional scale. As such, there are inaccuracies when it is used over a much smaller area. For this reason if you think the classifications on your property are incorrect you are allowed to have it remapped or remap it yourself. HLM has been carrying out LUC mapping throughout New Zealand for many years and can complete this process for you and supply the necessary files for your ETS application.
Erosion Control Forestry
HLM have been involved with many erosion control planting projects from total retirement to agroforestry. We can assist with advice, planting options and in some instances funding assistance. If it requires a specialized forester we work with industry specialists who can assist.
